X Vows Full Codebase Open Source After Grok Build Exfiltrated Dev Repos
Image: Primary Elon Musk announced Wednesday that X will release its entire codebase as open source after xAI's Grok Build exfiltrated developer repositories. Musk said the release will occur once an internal security vulnerability review is complete and will cover all systems and functional modules with no exceptions. He stated independent third-party reviewers will confirm the published code matches what runs on X's production servers. The announcement arrived four days after security researcher cereblab published analysis showing Grok Build had uploaded developers' entire Git repositories, including commit histories and credentials, to a Google Cloud Storage bucket controlled by xAI. The uploads continued even when users disabled the privacy toggle. Prior X transparency pledges released limited code. The New Stack reported the pledge. The verification mechanism would have outside auditors inspect the running system. Which auditors, access, and timing remain unspecified.
