Google Plans to Invest Up to $40 Billion in Anthropic

Google Plans to Invest Up to $40 Billion in Anthropic Image: Primary
Google plans to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic, the AI startup behind the Claude chatbot, according to a Bloomberg report cited by Engadget. Google is committing $10 billion now at Anthropic's current valuation, with an additional $30 billion available if the startup meets specific performance milestones. Anthropic says Google will also provide 5 gigawatts of computing capacity in 2027 through its existing commitment to use Google's tensor processing units and servers. The deal follows a similar agreement Anthropic reached with Amazon earlier in April. Amazon said it would invest $5 billion in Anthropic, with up to $20 billion more available if milestones are met. Anthropic also agreed to use Amazon's Trainium chips. Anthropic recently raised $30 billion in its most recent funding round. The parallel deals with Google and Amazon illustrate a pattern in the AI industry where startups receive large investments from cloud providers and then commit to spending on those providers' chips and servers.
