Intel: Stock market rollercoaster ride after TSMC-Nvidia-AMD-Broadcom rumors
Image: Primary Intel shares swung sharply on rumors that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. proposed a joint venture to take over Intel's chip manufacturing division, Reuters reported. TSMC reportedly approached Nvidia, AMD, Broadcom and Qualcomm about the venture before announcing its own new U.S. semiconductor plants involving $100 billion in investments. Talks are ongoing, though Qualcomm is said to have lost interest. The Trump administration allegedly favors a takeover of Intel plants, but TSMC's stake would not exceed 50 percent to keep formal U.S. ownership. Nvidia and Broadcom are reportedly testing chips with Intel's 18A production generation while AMD evaluates the process. Intel's board reportedly favors a sale only as part of a package including its chip design division for Core and Xeon processors, potentially complicating negotiations. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan ruled out a purchase under his management, but a joint venture under TSMC management would negate those objections. Intel shares rose 10 percent on the initial Reuters report before falling around 5 percent amid market uncertainty under the Trump administration.
