Google commits $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to U.S. Genesis Mission
Image: Primary Google is committing $40 million of AI tokens and cloud credits for researchers in support of the White House Genesis Mission, Google DeepMind and Google Cloud said in a company blog post timed to the DOE Genesis Mission Summit 2026.
The expanded commitment will first give Department of Energy Genesis Mission awardees in-kind access to Google DeepMind's frontier AI for science portfolio, including AlphaEvolve for algorithm design, AlphaFold 3 for biomolecular structure and interactions, AlphaGenome for DNA variation effects, WeatherNext weather models, and AlphaEarth Foundations for planetary mapping. Google will also provide Gemini for Government seats and tokens for one year to tens of thousands of users across DOE National Laboratories' operations, research, and management teams on a secure platform spanning bench work through user-facility administration.
The post said Google DeepMind earlier announced an early access program providing AI for science tools to all 17 DOE National Laboratories, and Google Public Sector described how Gemini for Government could support DOE work as a secure AI platform backbone. The company framed Genesis as a national effort to harness AI and double the pace of American scientific discovery within a decade.
At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, senior scientist Henry Kvinge is using AlphaEvolve to map mathematical systems too complex to explore by hand. At the National Laboratory of the Rockies, senior materials data scientist Steven R. Spurgeon said deploying Gemini in instruments cut microscope calibration time from over 90 minutes to about 13 minutes and reduced manual focus steps from as many as 50 to two, supporting more autonomous materials discovery workflows.
Google said the work aims to accelerate breakthroughs across energy, security, and scientific challenges and pointed researchers to the upcoming Google Public Sector Summit in October.
