GPT-5 turning one as OpenAI shares new Agent Plugins standard

OpenAI introduced Agent Plugins on Thursday, an open standard for packaging reusable AI-agent extensions that work across compatible products, as GPT-5 approaches its first anniversary on August 7. The company announced the version 1.0.0 specification, which defines a shared format for Agent Skills and Model Context Protocol servers that clients can discover and load consistently. A vendor-neutral steering committee for the project includes Amazon, Cursor, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Vercel. The technology is openly licensed and developed in public, according to the Agent Plugins site. GPT-5 launched on August 7, 2025, replacing GPT-4o as ChatGPT's default model with automatic routing between quick answers and deeper reasoning. Apple adopted the model for Apple Intelligence features across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. OpenAI subsequently released multiple updates including GPT-5.1 through GPT-5.6 variants. The company also transformed its desktop software, launching a Codex Mac app in February that effectively became the new ChatGPT desktop app in July. OpenAI has not announced GPT-6, though an unreleased model family called Astra has advanced 10 longstanding math and computer-science problems internally.
