September Windows Server patches disrupt Remote Desktop Services
Image: Primary Administrators report that Microsoft's September 2026 Patch Tuesday cumulative updates are breaking Remote Desktop Services on Windows Server 2019, 2022 and 2025, according to BleepingComputer.
Servers reportedly run normally for hours before new connections hang and fail, and existing sessions may not log off cleanly; some admins say only a hard reset restores service. Affected builds cited are KB5122876, KB5122882 and KB5122871. Rolling back the updates restores Remote Desktop functionality but also removes this month's security fixes.
Microsoft said it is aware of the reports and is investigating, and will share guidance when available. The cause has not been confirmed by Microsoft.
