California legislature sends data-center electricity measures to governor

California lawmakers passed bills aimed at preventing data-center operators from shifting grid and power costs to residential ratepayers, sending them to Governor Gavin Newsom for signature or veto. Senate Bill 886 would require the California Public Utilities Commission to establish a tariff covering transmission, distribution and generation costs for new large-load customers with at least 75MW of peak demand. Assembly Bill 2383 would set separate generation and transmission tariffs for new large-load customers beginning in 2027 if SB 886 becomes law. Other passed measures would require water and energy reporting or related disclosures.
