OpenAI adds Google SynthID watermarks to AI images and previews verification portal
OpenAI is expanding its tools for identifying AI-generated content. The company will now apply Google's SynthID watermarks to images created with ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API.
This builds on its existing use of C2PA content credentials. OpenAI said the two systems work together to provide more resilient provenance signals that can survive transformations like screenshots.
OpenAI is also previewing a public portal where users can upload images to check for AI metadata or watermarks. The tool currently focuses on OpenAI-generated images but plans to support additional verification systems.
