Nvidia (NVDA) Shares Dip Amid Reports of Massive $250B OpenAI Financing Commitment
Image: Primary Nvidia shares fell 0.92% on Monday after the Wall Street Journal reported the chipmaker is negotiating a financing package worth about $250 billion to support OpenAI's planned data center in Ohio, according to a Reuters report. The Journal said Nvidia is discussing financial guarantees for the facility's lease obligations and a separate arrangement to fund up to $350 billion in semiconductor acquisitions for the same project.
The 10-gigawatt computing campus in southern Ohio is being developed by SoftBank's energy division, with total costs projected to exceed $500 billion. Nvidia's combined exposure could reach $600 billion. The Journal said the guarantees aim to give institutional lenders confidence because OpenAI lacks an investment-grade credit rating.
OpenAI currently relies on computing capacity from Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle. The company is the leading candidate for the Ohio site, though Anthropic, Microsoft and Google have also held talks with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who influences federal power allocation decisions. Electrical infrastructure funding is tied to a bilateral trade agreement with Japan.
Reuters could not independently confirm the Journal's reporting. Nvidia, OpenAI and the Commerce Department did not respond to requests for comment. Oracle shares dropped 4.21%, SoftBank fell 3.07% and Amazon declined 0.66%, while Microsoft edged up 0.03%.
