Canada suspends U.S. trade talks and pledges matching tariffs
Canada's prime minister said the government had suspended trade negotiations with the United States and directed its negotiators to return to Ottawa.
The statement said the United States intended to impose a 50% tariff at midnight on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods, and that Canada would match those tariffs dollar for dollar. Canada said late changes to the proposed U.S. terms were unfair and called a deal's reliability into question.
The government also said it would introduce further support measures for Canadian workers and businesses in coming days.
