OpenAI reportedly developing smartphone centered on AI agents
Image: Primary OpenAI is developing its own smartphone that would focus on AI agent capabilities, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The device would be powered by custom hardware from either MediaTek or Qualcomm, with production through Luxshare, a company that also assembles iPhones.
Kuo says the device would "deliver a comprehensive AI agent service." A concept shared by the analyst shows a device that replaces its homescreen with a panel of information and ongoing agentic AI tasks, such as booking flights and compiling market data. Kuo believes this is how AI agents will "redefine" the smartphone.
The actual device is not expected to be finalized until late this year or early 2027, with mass production not happening until 2028. The report does not specify what operating system the device would use.
The project suggests OpenAI sees smartphones as a platform for AI agents rather than a category that AI will replace entirely.
