From Promise to Progress: Governor Hochul Celebrates Major Milestone for Micron's $100 Billion Investment in Central New York
Image: Primary SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP), Micron Technology marked a construction milestone Thursday at its $100 billion semiconductor campus in central New York, pouring concrete for the first of four planned chipmaking factories. Company President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said the project has accelerated, gaining three months on its schedule since breaking ground in January. "We are proud that we have accelerated this," Mehrotra said. "In six months, we have gained three months." Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick praised the pace of work, contrasting it with other groundbreaking ceremonies. "Lots of companies can do a groundbreaking, right? They have nice shovels, and they do it right," Lutnick said. "You have to hold their feet to the fire. Are they delivering what they said?" Gov. Kathy Hochul said Micron's investment is attracting other major businesses to New York, citing record commercial lease investments. Micron expects memory chip production to begin in the first factory in 2028 or 2029, with the full project spanning 20 years.
